EJ Publications
This new resource provides information on national demographic trends and notable EJ analysis practices to help transportation practitioners better understand and respond to rapid community change while improving methods to meaningfully involve EJ populations in transportation decision making.
This new resource provides strategies and techniques used during transportation planning and programming for identifying EJ populations; conducting targeted public involvement; assessing EJ population transportation needs; understanding benefits and burdens of proposed transportation plans; determining whether transportation plans may result in disproportionately high and adverse effects; and deploying strategies to address such effects.
Other EJ Resources
The National Highway Institute (NHI) is now offering a new 2-day instructor-led Environmental Justice Analysis Course. The course builds on an existing NHI Web-Based Course that covers the Fundamentals of EJ and provides an intermediate-level training on the process of conducting an EJ analysis during transportation planning and environmental review; including practical strategies, approaches, and tools.
Complementing these resources, FHWA partnered with the AASHTO’s Center for Environmental Excellence to develop a new case study on: “Using Social Media to Reach Environmental Justice Communities.” This case study discusses strategies to effectively use social media to improve outreach and participation of EJ communities in transportation planning and project development. Best practice case examples with Georgia DOT and the North Central Texas Council of Governments are provided.
