IN PURSUIT OF EQUITY Environmental Justice on Tribal Lands

Environmental justice and Native American transportation issues intersect in ways that vary by transportation mode and geographic location and are addressed at different levels of government and by different stakeholders. These challenges make it difficult to ensure that the rights and needs of the tribes are addressed in an ethical way and in accordance with state and federal laws. Adding to the challenges are the number of officially recognized Native American tribes and communities—more than 574—spread out across the United
